How can we use scents to improve our daily lives?

Have you ever walked into a room and instantly felt a wave of calmness or excitement? Or maybe you caught a whiff of a familiar scent that brought back a flood of memories? The power of scents to influence our emotions and behavior is truly remarkable. In this blog post, we will explore the fascinating world of scent psychology and how different smells can impact our mood, productivity, and overall well-being.

How do scents affect our emotions?

Our sense of smell is directly linked to the emotional center of our brain, known as the limbic system. This is why certain smells can evoke strong emotional responses, even before we consciously process them. For example, the scent of lavender has been shown to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety, while the smell of cedar can boost empowering energy and reduce stress.

Can scents influence our behavior?

Absolutely! Businesses and marketers have long recognized the power of scents to influence consumer behavior. In retail environments, pleasant smells can create a positive atmosphere and increase the likelihood of customers making a purchase. Studies have also shown that certain scents, such as the smell of freshly baked bread or coffee, can make us feel more generous and increase our willingness to help others.

Guests at Idea Chíc encounter a host of scents any given day. How it smells is a reflection of what we are making. What we are making can influence the conversation around positive memories. We are always listening!

  • The ink and grease smells from our 1930s letterpress remind people of some other workshop in the family. Shop class in high school. Artist´ studios. Nostalgia!
  • The trained nose can smell warm paper when to digital printer is clicking away in the back. ¨I love that smell¨, we hear.
  • We make seven different sachets, Mulling Spice and tea favors too. Chances are good we are assembling at least one at any given time. Each inspires a story.
    • Rose - Grandma or specifically her bedroom or bathroom. We hear this from 30 year old to 70 year old, thinking about Grandma.
    • Evergreen and Cedar - memories of that cabin in the woods after a light rain.
    • It is interesting when we are preparing Mulling Spice later in the summer for fall wedding favors or for our retailers stocking early for their stores. Starting in July and daily in August - on, you might come in and be swept straight to autumn. It seems everyone is excited about the next season. It comes up all the time!

These scents bring people to think about folks they did not know would come to mind because they are visiting Idea Chíc. Gift ideas spring to mind. That is not our intention, here. Promise! This is where we make these things!
